THE GREAT LAKES MARCH TO CAPITOL HILL

Next week will be monumental for the Great Lakes on Capitol Hill.  First off, the 2006 Great Lakes Day will be held on March 16 in Washington, D.C.  Great Lakes Day is an annual tradition providing the opportunity for the region’s policymakers, leaders and members of Congress to discuss priorities for our precious natural resources.  This year, the focus of the  Great Lakes Day is the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration (GLRC).  Discussions on Capitol Hill will emphasize the importance of advancing the GLRC to help restore and protect the Great Lakes ecosystem.  Additionally, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will hold a hearing on the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration’s strategy to restore and protect the Great Lakes on Thursday, March 16.

In coordination with the Great Lakes Day in Washington, Healing Our Waterssm-Great Lakes Coalition is pulling together approximately 100 citizens representing a variety of organizations that have joined forces to restore and protect the Great Lakes.  We will be taking over Capitol Hill for 2 days advocating to members of Congress to fund Great Lakes programs (recently cut in the President’s proposed 2007 budget), pass the National Aquatic Invasive Species Act, and introduce a bill that will implement the GLRC’s recommendations.

TRANSCRIPT OF SUPREME COURT WETLAND CASES AVAILABLE

We have included numerous updates on the U.S Supreme Court cases that will make a determination on national wetlands protection.  In the 34-year history of the Clean Water Act, the most important decision now rests in the hands of the Supreme Court justices.  For those of you who have been following the Rapanos and Carabell case closely but were unable to attend, you can now read the transcript of what transpired when the Supreme Court heard the oral arguments on February 21, 2006.  To view the transcript visit: http://www.supremecourtus.gov/oral_arguments/argument_transcripts/04-1034.pdf. The transcript will also be available on the MWAC website at http://michiganwetlands.org/.

A decision is expected this summer and we will be sure to provide you with more updates as they develop.
